Protect Your Account Against Attackers: Best Practices for Online Security

With the rise in online account attacks and data breaches, it is important to follow these best practices to ensure that your account at PNWFCU is protected from unauthorized users.

  1. Never Reuse Passwords: Attackers are constantly targeting popular websites and social media sites to gain access to personal information. If an attacker gains access to your credentials at one of these sites then they may be able to access other accounts if you are using the same password. Do not use the same password for your PNWFCU account as you use for any other website.
  2. Use a Strong Password: A strong password is one that is difficult for a person or computer program to discover. It includes a sufficient length and mix of letters, numbers and symbols. It should not include complete words or names, or number combinations such as your birthday, address, or account number.
  3. Use a Password Manager: Passwords should always be stored in an encrypted document. A password manager is an easy and safe way to generate and store passwords safely. Some free password manager apps you can download are KeePass and Dashlane.
  4. Use Two-Factor Authentication: Most sites now have the option of requiring a one-time passcode (sent via text or email) in addition to a password. This is a good way to ensure that someone can’t easily access your account, even if they get your password. Your PNWFCU account will always require two-factor authentication unless you register your device as “private” when logging in. Do not ever select the private setting when using a computer that is shared with anyone else, such as at the library or a hotel.
  5. Never Share Your Passwords or Login Information: Financial fraud often occurs because someone shares their login credentials with someone who is not on their account. Do not ever give someone else, even a family member, access to your account unless they are on the account with you.
  6. Review Your Accounts Frequently: It is important to regularly review your accounts for accuracy. As an additional precaution, set up alerts when your card is used or when specific transactions occur, such as large withdrawals. Report any unusual activity right away.
